Branded for Business
Visit a Starbucks anywhere in the world and you will experience a familiar environment and friendly, knowledgeable baristas who serve up a cup of coffee that is made to order. Their consistent brand builds trust with customers and keeps them coming back, even though they will pay a bit more for their favorite beverage.
Businesses invest a great deal in research and development to create a brand that effectively and consistently communicates who they are and what they offer.
A good brand will:
Are you branded for business success? You are the CEO of your own company and that company is YOU! You must continue to develop and invest in your most valuable business asset – YOU!
Over the next couple of months we will consider the ABC’s of your personal brand –Appearance, Behavior and Communication.
Your Business Appearance
Grooming, clothing, accessories, and posture instantly send a message to those you meet and define your level of professionalism. It is attention to detail that is required- not a large bank account.
Being well groomed is essential. Skin, hair and nails require daily care. Extreme styles are limiting and should be reserved for the fashion or entertainment industry.
Clothing should communicate authority. Straight lines, darker colors, high contrast, firm fabrics, structured and fitted clothing are ideal. Add a third piece such as a jacket or cardigan and you boost your authority another notch. Remember, the more skin you show, the less authority you have. Make sure your clothing is in excellent condition and free from wrinkles, stains and pet hair.
Accessories are a great way to express your individual style. Personally, I love pearls and gold and wear them often. In most business settings avoid jewelry that makes noise or is too distracting.
Excellent posture is one of the best bargains around. It is free! It just requires awareness and practice. You can elevate your appearance by simply assuming terrific posture.
By consistently maintaining a polished appearance you brand yourself as someone who is a professional.
Watch for the B & C of your personal brand in future posts.
